An Immigrant’s Wants…

“To be acknowledged for who and what I am. No more, no less. Not for acclaim, not for approval. The simple truth of that recognition. This has been the elemental drive of my existence, and it must be achieved if I am to live or die with dignity.”
Andrew the robot from Bicentennial Man

If I am to live or die with dignity…that is all I ask for. To be able to be free. That is what I’m jealous of all my friends, their freedom…

Bravery Beyond Words…

What the girl did was incredible and heartbreaking. I don’t know how else to describe it. Brave beyond anything I’ve ever done. To ‘out’ your self in front of a class while being video taped is something I don’t think I will ever do. It’s…just…wow.

She describes our lives with the perfect line, to live in a line between privilege and marginalization. I don’t know how else to describe it, to live as I and many others do is just too abstract. There are too many things to take into account. But those words describe our lives perfectly.

Anyways, I just wanted to show you that video. Grecia is a very brave woman, in words I can’t describe.

And I’m back…

“Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!” Samuel L. “I’m a badass motherfucker” Jackson in Snakes on a Plane.

So, I just wanted to open with that. I’m back from the dead! Zombie style. No, not really but I’m back, in a limited fashion to some extent. I had a week to think about this blogging situation. And I made the decision of coming back to this blog to continue writing. No, the updates won’t be daily even though I’ll try.

As for me, I’ve been incredibly busy. I had a great fantastic weekend but it didn’t leave me any time for blogging or writing or school. I had the opportunity to see a very special show at my school and got to see a celebrity. It was a great show. I’ve met a new cool friend so that has been great. I’ve had a lot of work as well, two midterm essays due last Tuesday and a story of mine is being work shopped at my creative writing class. I hate the story so I suspect that it won’t be a good time for me. I’m dreading it.

As to why I’m back. Well, I came to the conclusion that two blogs are better than one. And I have a lot more freedom on this blog to write about whatever I want. I believe that the more blogs there are the better. I’ve seen that the last couple of posts are not about immigration at all so I’ll be working on that because I’m kind of embarrassed by it. I won’t review another video game until the God of War ones are out of the front page. I might do books but no movies either, at least not at the moment. So, yes, I’ll be still be writing here and try to write in the other blog as well. So I leave you with this,

May the Force be with us all.
PS. If you don’t like Star Wars, you simply suck…

Last Post…

Posted in blog, blogging, life, personal, random, reading, school, thoughts, writing on February 15, 2008 by iamashadow

So, I’m sorry I haven’t had much time to post. I’ve been sick. My memory card for the Nintendo Gamecube games was corrupted. So…I lost about 40 games worth of data and god knows how many hours of game time. So I’ve been mourning it. A lot. I’ve also had to write a short story and I hate it. Despise it. My class is going to hate me.

As for the title, maybe not the last post for sure. Yes, the anti-immigrants have changed my mind. They have convinced me of the fact that I’m the scum of the earth and should be deported, or better yet, be shot. Now excuse me while I laugh…a lot.

No, of course the anti-immigrants have not defeated me. No. I have been given the opportunity to write for another blog and will do so. I’ve come to the realization that I won’t be able to keep both this blog and write for the other at the same time, everyday. The other blog will be a lot bigger than this one, and I won’t be the only writer. The focus will be immigration of course. As for this blog? Well, I want to say that I will discontinue it but I won’t. I will update it from time to time, maybe once a week from now on or something. I don’t want to be focused on movie trailers or video games either so I don’t know what I’ll write about. Maybe about myself and American side of me. You know, my normal life.

Anyways, I don’t want to get all mushy now. I really liked this blog and writing. I want to thank all of my readers for the patience that you had with my bad grammar, and for the encouraging comments. Especially a big shout out to those who backed me up in the comments against the anti-immigrants. And as for the anti-immigrants who commented, thank you for raising my popularity and raising my hits. Don’t worry, I never commented on your sites and never will. Haha, you probably thought I had been deported haven’t you. No, not yet anyways.

As for the new site that I’m working on, write a comment and I’ll let you know what it is. I’ll give out a hint about it though, and the saying goes, this a brave new world isn’t it? With such people in it…

I’ll be back here some time later and this is not the last time you’ve heard of me. Peace!

Trailers: Indiana Jones IV and Blade Runner

Posted in art, entertainment, fiction, movie, random, reviews, trailers, videos, youtube on February 15, 2008 by iamashadow

Yeah, well, yesterday I found the trailer for Indiana Jones IV. Watch, and be in awe. Haha. I’m sorry, but I really like the other films and so I wanted to share that. I can’t wait for May.

Okay, here is a trailer for a film that already came out and I believe that everyone should watch. Blade Runner. Classic of the sci-fi genre. It is above a classic probably. I have the final version which cleaned up a lot of the images and Riddley Scott took time to fix some things in the film. It is called Final Version too, the definitive version. If you can get it on HD than do it. I don’t have an HD TV so there was no sense for me to buy it on Blue-Ray or HD-DVD. This movie is where this line came from, something I believe in, “Quite an experience to live in fear, that’s what it’s like to be a slave.” What makes us human if something that else that is artificial can be too?

If you could only see what I see…and know what I know…

Video Games: The Legend of Zelda series

Posted in Gamecube, N64, Nintendo, Wii, entertainment, games, random, reviews, thoughts, video games, videos, youtube on February 15, 2008 by iamashadow

Well, what can I say about this series other than it is perfect it in my eyes. Of course, not just mine but many others. My favorite video game in the series is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It is the highest rated game of all time, even after almost being 10 years old this year, according to both Metacritic and Gamerankings. It also has the most perfect scores from most video game publications of the time, including, Famitsu from Japan, and EGM, IGN, and Gamespot in America. The other game in the series that I’ve played are the follow ups to Ocarina of Time. Majora’s Mask for the N64, The Wind Waker for the Gamecube and Twilight Princess for the Gamecube and Wii. All of them are great games, they just don’t quite reach the perfection of Ocarina. No, I don’t play the handheld versions of the game and I haven’t played Link to the Past from the Super Nintendo. My first console was the Nintendo 64 so that’s why.

Anyways, I really like the series and there is nothing better out there. Yeah, I went there and I stand by it no matter what. Not Halo, no Mario game, no other game series. But that’s just my opinion and the opinion of hundreds of others. The  Legend of Zelda=Awesomeness. I highly recommend any of the games in the series, especially Ocarina of Time even if it is old by today’s standards.

Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64. Get it! There is a Gamecube port, and it is available on the Wii Shop Channel. I have all versions. Yes, I’m a fanboy.

Ad for the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for the Nintendo Gamecube. Very fun game, kind of easy though.

Trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Gamecube and Wii. I suggest the Wii version, controls great!

Book: World War Z

Posted in English, art, book, books, entertainment, fiction, literature, personal, random, reading, reviews, thoughts on February 9, 2008 by iamashadow

So, this is the last book I read. I finished last weekend and want to write about it since I liked it and have done video games in the past. So why not a book right? And I apologize for my poor reviewing skills. I can only narrow it down to these simple words: I liked the book and recommend you get it.

World War Z. It is the first and only book that I’ve read that has zombies in it. And I’m telling you, it is a pretty good one. It is a horrifying vision of the future as the entire planet is engulfed in a world war against the zombies. The book doesn’t really explain how the zombies come about, that is said in the prequel to WWZ, The Zombie Survival Guide. The zombies are explained in a very scientific way, as if they were real. WWZ deals with the war against them, humanity losing lots of territory and utter chaos in every part of the globe. This book makes everything be realistic because of the fact that it doesn’t have a straight narrative as most novels do. The book is told from various points of views in the style of a documentary. It makes it more real and therefore more scary.

I liked the way it was done, very original. I’ve known about zombies, mainly because movies and especially video games with the Resident Evil series and I found the book to be quite entertaining. It does not deal with only the American front of the war, but treats it as a global issue. The reader can see the points of view from lots of different places, like England, Russia, Cuba and Antarctica. Not all the chapters are great but most of them are. I highly recommend it if you like an entertaining read.

I told you so…

The American people don’t want an anti-immigrant president it seems. They don’t want someone who bashes immigrants and blames EVERYTHING on them. They are the little people, the ones who can’t even defend themselves and have to get others to do so for them. Thompson, Tancredo, Hunter, and now Romney. They all have fallen, Huckabee and Paul for some reason are still in the race and they are not going to win anything. Super Tuesday told us that.

Now, just because McCain pretty much has the nomination doesn’t mean that the pro-immigrant groups have to slow down. We must continue ahead and fight the injustices taking place in Virginia, Utah and South Carolina. Things are looking good now since McCain is now the front runner. And no, I don’t agree with all his points.

And I know the anti-immigrant forces are not going to stop. They have suffered a defeat at a national level and they will step it up to fight us off. They will raise the hate and dehumanization talk, they won’t stop the bashing. I wish they would stop with the hate for those they consider inferior. I really don’t see how it improves their life to bash a group of people. I and others run this blog mainly because I’m an American except on paper and I want to have that fixed. I want to fight for myself and others like me. But them…I would tell them to go out and enjoy the opportunities you have as an American instead of trying to trample on those who are trying to have those same opportunities. Get on a plane, travel, get on a car and have a trip around the country. See the sights and travel abroad, enjoy life and let go of the bashing. Those things I mentioned, I wish I could them, but you can, you have nothing to fear. Unlike me.

Personal thoughts of the day

Posted in blog, blogging, college, depression, life, personal, random, thoughts, writing on February 8, 2008 by iamashadow

So, I’m an English/History major now. I’ll be having an advising meeting to see what that involves. I think I’m closer to a history degree now than an English. I dropped one of my classes, I just didn’t think I could handle the amount of reading and writing being asked of me.

I have to write a short story pretty soon. It is due on the 14 and will be work shopped the week after. I’m pretty nervous about it. I’ve never considered myself a strong writer, mainly because my grammar is so bad. I’m trying to fix it by increasing my reading. I don’t know what I’ll end up writing. I want to write a fantasy story but don’t want it to turn out to be a Tolkien clone. Have to be creative. I also had to write a paper on my religious beliefs for my Spanish class. I don’t like to write about those things but oh well, I want a good grade so I’ll do it.

As for other things, I decided to go back to therapy… Yes, I’m clinically depressed and I’ve been sad (not same as depressed my therapist told me) for various reasons on the last couple of weeks. I had a refill of my anti-depressants so that’s good. I had a lot of things to talk about with my therapist. Being clinically depressed…it’s depressing. There is really no other way to describe it. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It’s like believing the entire world is going to end and nothing else matters… Wow, this is quite sad. I should end in the happy note.

The first person who I told the truth about my status had this to say. “Dude…you have the biggest b***s of this university.” He said this in the dining hall, and I couldn’t stop laughing afterwards. It’s something I’ll never forget. Ever.

Sorry…

So, no update yesterday, sorry about that. I discovered Steam, online service for selling video games. So I downloaded lots of demos and bought a couple of video games. Okay…couple is small. Anyways, my laptop slowed down to a crawl and couldn’t use it. So yesterday I was dealing with a broken computer but now I’m back. Yay. And I’m sick or getting sick. A cold. :-( But that will not stop me from writing my posts and than sending them out so they can be posted. Hopefully I won’t do anything else stupid on my laptop but than again, this is me who we are talking about and I love those video games. And for the curious, I got Half Life 1 and 2, Deus Ex, Max Payne, Deus Ex: The Invisible War, and a demo of Dawn of War. In my computer I already had Star Craft, World of Warcraft, Rise of Nations, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Civilization IV and the Expansion pack of Beyond the Sword and Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Needless to say, I almost like PC gaming as much as I like Nintendo.

And…I chose…

I finally declared a major. I am no longer majorless and say that I’m a bum going from class to class with no direction in life. I am now a bum with English and History as my directions in life. I could have gone with Spanish and could still do so I guess but I already know Spanish. Anyways, just wanted to let people know because I’m quite happy I finally chose something before advising yelled at me for my indecisive ways. And yes, I do despise math and science. I find those subjects boring, but hey, that’s just me. Anyways, if you are reading this, tell me any advice you might have if you are an English or History major. Or both.

Video Games: God of War 1 and 2

Posted in Nintendo, PS2, Sony, entertainment, games, reviews, thoughts, video games, videos, youtube on February 5, 2008 by iamashadow

Wow, it looks like this is becoming more of a thing I do every week, reviewing a video game. I like it and will continue to do so. But on to the God of War games.

Action filled. No other words can describe those two games. God of War 2 is the reason I own my PS2 in the first place. I, being a Nintendo player, had never experienced that kind of action. Not even a Legend of Zelda game has as much. The Gamecube was not going to have this level of action until Resident Evil 4 was released. The violence in the game is not for kids, even though I was under the age of the M rating when I played it. And no, unlike mass media is trying to say, I’m not going to turn into a mass murderer.

Anyways. The graphics of both games push the PS2 to the max, especially the second one. I like this because the second game doesn’t actually have load times or if it does, they tend to be a second long. The score of the game is fantastic. But the story, now those are special. It takes the background of something, in this case Greek mythology, and reinvents it to make it a kick ass story of a man who has been royally screwed over by the gods of Olympus. Ares in the first game, Zeus in the second one.

Kratos is an anti-hero. Someone who is not going to be stopped by ANYTHING in his search for revenge over what has happened in his past. The blades of chaos are wonderful weapons and great for pulling of combos, and his other powers are not bad either. I especilly liked the blade of Artemis in the first game, missed it in the second. The first game in opinion suffers from the sin of being short, too short for my liking and the only reason I forgive it is because because the action is VERY good. It is a hell of a ride. The second game tries to rectify this by being longer. Another flaw of the first game is that it didn’t have many bosses, 2 or 3 I think. The second has more, with the first 10 minutes of the game being a boss fight against a gigantic statue that wants to crush you. Most games start small and slow, and God of War 2’s beginning is its way of saying ‘f**k you’ to normal conventions. Never will you experience a beginning of a game like in God of War 2.

What else can I say about the game? Both of them recieved their respective game of year award in the year they were released, at least for the PS2. I don’t know what the competition was in a multiplatform level. One thing is for sure, when God of 3 arrives, I’m pretty sure I’m going to run to a store to buy a PS3 and play that game. Go out and buy it now, you won’t regret it, epic awesomeness!

A cool new website has appeared, it is We Can Stop Stop the Hate. They have an interesting video which I will now post. We can stop the hate, if we work together and rise as one to stop the stupidity that is happening all over the nation.

To all the haters…

You are the minority. You have a loud bark but you will lose. Florida has shown us that. McCain being up front and if he wins Super Tuesday, than we will all know for sure what America’s stand on immigration is. As for the CNN poll, read ‘em and weep boys!

From the Indianapolis Star

To understand what happened with Republican voters in Florida, keep in mind four things:

No. 1 — The Hispanic vote went to McCain by an overwhelming margin of almost 4-1. According to exit polls, Hispanics made up 12 percent of Republican voters and, of those Hispanics who voted, 54 percent supported McCain. Romney got 14 percent of the Hispanic vote, despite spending heavily on ads in Spanish-language media.
No. 2 — With Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter out of the race, and Mike Huckabee having difficulty convincing GOP hard-liners that his lurch to the right on illegal immigration is sincere, Romney has become the de facto choice for nativists, restrictionists and closed-border enthusiasts. Tancredo, who endorsed Romney, had drawn the ire of Cuban-American voters for referring to Miami as a Third World country.
No. 3 — McCain has been criticized by the right-wing media for objecting to an amendment to the 2006 McCain-Kennedy immigration reform bill that declared English the “national language” of the United States. According to National Review Online, McCain scolded colleagues in the Republican cloakroom and accused the cultural conservatives pushing the measure of “insulting” Latinos, who have often objected to such declarations as divisive and unnecessary.
No. 4 — There is something of a McCain paradox developing in primary states where Republicans tell pollsters that immigration is a top issue and have the most trust in McCain to handle it, despite the fact that some conservative radio talk show hosts and members of Congress portray McCain’s views on the issue as unacceptably lenient. Some might say that this is because McCain now understands that he has to put border security first, but it’s a conversion that apparently his conservative critics aren’t buying.
What does it all mean? Since McCain beat Romney overall by just 5 percentage points — with 36 percent of the vote for the Arizona senator to 31 percent for the former Massachusetts governor — it’s likely that Hispanics contributed significantly to McCain’s margin of victory. And among Hispanics, it’s also likely that Romney was hurt by his hard line on illegal immigration and McCain helped by his more moderate position, since a majority of Hispanics support allowing illegal immigrants to stay in the United States in one capacity or another. And, lastly, it seems possible that — despite Republican voters listing immigration as a top concern — either they’re not taking such concern into the voting booth, or they’re not buying attempts by some right-wingers to depict McCain as soft on the issue, or they’re just not as fired up about deporting illegal immigrants as you would think from monitoring the conservative media.
Exit polling in Florida showed that nearly 60 percent of voters in that state would allow illegal immigrants to stay as temporary workers or on a path to citizenship. Among Hispanic Republicans, only 20 percent said illegal immigrants should be deported. Forty-three percent said they should be allowed to stay as temporary workers, and one-third said they should have a shot at citizenship.
Other polls from around the county tell us much the same thing — that, depending on how you ask the question and whether you use words such as “amnesty” or “earned legalization,” a majority of Americans support the comprehensive approach that McCain proposed. It’s starting to look as if the Republican Party’s anti-illegal immigration zealots may represent a loud and obnoxious faction of conservative voters, but a small one at that.
This is good news for McCain on the eve of Super Tuesday. Look for him to do well in California and the Southwest, where voters have lots of firsthand experience with both legal and illegal immigration, know the impact on their communities — both positive and negative — and remain skeptical of macho talk and simple solutions. It’s bad news for Romney, who seems to have become persona non grata with Hispanic voters. Many of them are frustrated because, while they don’t support an outright amnesty, they do think there is a middle ground. And they resent opportunistic politicians who try to scare up votes at their expense, and then attempt to cover their tracks with Spanish-language commercials.
Once again, out West, the sleeping giant is stirring. And he’s in a foul mood.
