I admire them for their courage and dignity in the face of oppression (and I am a U.S. citizen, not that that matters a whit.) The nation is NOT founded on legal, controlled immigration... it was founded on the theft of land from Native Americans. They have never been compensated for this theft, so that makes white people like Jill "illegal" (and I include myself, since I am Caucasian). Let's face it: her arguments are really just a front for bigotry. Undocumented Immigrants come here because of U.S. policies, like NAFTA which threw hundreds of Mexican farmers off the land when U.S. corn market flooded the Mexican market. The U.S. is also supporting campaigns of terror in Mexico and Colombia that targets peasants, human rights workers, and indigenous people, among others. If you care about stemming the flow of immigration, you should care about these issues, Jill. Connecting the dots.... U.S. aggression leads to more immigration. We are a nation of immigrants, and soon enough, you will be depending on young Latino immigrants for your retirement. So I suggest you learn some compassion now! If you can't do that much, then l will be only too happy to see you take the "legal" route, and haul your ass back to Europe. We really don't need any more hateful people in this country. From my perspective, you don't have any more "legal" right to be here than anyone else. I saw a great bumper sticker the other day. It said, "Yes, immigration is a problem... Just ask an Indian!" Just personally, I am ashamed of the treatment that hard-working, undocument immigrants are receiving from bigoted whites. You make some very good arguments, M. I'm so sorry you have to put up with bigots. My advice: ignore them. They have nothing better to do with their time than torment the most vulnerable people. The argument regarding how young she was when she came here is fruitless. Be accountable for your actions, stop blaming your parents for not handling the paperwork. She's now an adult, she should have started paperwork to become a citizen. We all need to be accountable to the same laws. You are insisting that we are all 'equal' right ?
