The next end of the world movie by Roland Emmerich, 2012. His previous work regarding the destruction of the planet was the highly popular movie Independence Day and the slightly less popular, The Day After Tomorrow. So, aliens and the weather have destroyed us, who is up next? Actually, I don’t know, I guess I’ll have to wait for the film to open to find out. Also, I loved the very ending of the trailer, on regards to what they ask us to do to learn more about it.
Here is the trailer.

Low Activity November 26, 2008

I finished packing and will be going home soon for the holidays. That’s the reason for the low blogging activity compared to last week. In fact, I don’t think I’ll be blogging as much anymore. After I come back from the Thanksgiving holiday, I’m getting smacked in the head by finals. So, anyway, I will continue to post, not as much, but that’s about the best I can do. I hope everyone enjoys the turkey day that is coming up.

Okay, somehow lawmakers in Missouri have ‘found’ a link between abortion and immigration. It is because there have been too many abortions that the US needs immigrants. Okay, it is too ridiculous for me to summarize it, just read it. The Democrats think the Republicans are insane, I agree.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Nov. 13 — A Republican-led legislative panel says in a new report on illegal immigration that abortion is partly to blame because it is causing a shortage of American workers.
The report from the state House Special Committee on Immigration Reform also says that “liberal social welfare policies” have discouraged Americans from working and have encouraged immigrants to cross the border illegally.
The statements about abortion and welfare policies, along with a recommendation to abolish income taxes in favor of sales taxes, were inserted into the immigration report by Rep. Edgar G.H. Emery (R), the panel’s chairman.
All 10 Republican committee members signed the report, while the six Democrats did not. Some of the Democrats called the abortion assertion ridiculous and embarrassing.
“There’s a lot of editorial comment there that I couldn’t really stomach,” Rep. Trent Skaggs said Monday. “To be honest, I think it’s a little delusional.”
Emery, who equates abortion to murder, defended the assertions.
“We hear a lot of arguments today that the reason that we can’t get serious about our borders is that we are desperate for all these workers,” he said. “You don’t have to think too long. If you kill 44 million of your potential workers, it’s not too surprising we would be desperate for workers.”
National Right to Life estimates that there have been more than 47 million abortions since the Supreme Court established a woman’s right to an abortion in its 1973 Roe v. Waderuling. The immigration report estimates that there are 80,000 fewer Missourians because of abortion, many of whom now would have been in a “highly productive age group for workers.”
The statement connecting abortion to illegal immigration was listed under the report’s recommendations on federal social policies and potential state legislative action on illegal hiring.
“Suggestions for how to stop illegal hiring varied without any simple solution,” the report states. “The lack of traditional work ethic, combined with the effects of 30 years of abortion and expanding liberal social welfare policies have produced a shortage of workers and a lack of incentive for those who can work.”

I want to see this movie. I’m a big fan of Daren Aronofsky’s work. I’ve seen Requiem for a Dream which deals with hopes, dreams and drugs and The Fountain, a movie about the death. Now comes The Wrestler. It seems that the movie will come out slowly, which means that it should still be playing near my location by the time I come back from Christmas break. Here is the trailer.
Hate on the Rise November 24, 2008

Or so says the FBI. Attacks on Hispanics have grown over 40% from 2003 to 2007. I believe the number to be actually bigger, more attacks than the ones reported. Sure, the case of Marcelo Lucero and Luiz Ramirez made the news, but only because they were killed. What about those crimes and beatings that aren’t reported.
Take me for instance. If I was ever beaten up for being Latino, would I report it. No. I wouldn’t. I would love to, I would love to seek justice, but at the same time I feel that it would be too much risk. I’m sure friends and girlfriend would tell me to seek the police but I wouldn’t, not even the school security and such.
Anyway, back to the point. What is making all this hate grow? I’m sure it is language that is surrounding the immigration debate, the language coming from the xenophobic side of the debate. Why? Because those people have hijacked the debate and the words in it. Undocumented immigrants became illegal aliens, and they became Mexicans and they are transformed into all Latinos. And all Latinos are now targeted because they are all ‘evil’ ‘invaders’. Some people defend what happened because the people who are dead by saying that if they weren’t here undocumented, than nothing would have happened to them. But that’s not the point. The point is that things like the killings shouldn’t happen in the first place, there shouldn’t be any defense towards that.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. If you want to read up more on what is happening read the following link. Here is a quote from the article.
Jack Levin, a criminologist at Northeastern University in Boston, predicted the climate nationally will only get worse.
“I think you will see that hate crimes against Latinos will be on the rise for the next few years,” he said. “You can see this throughout history. Every time the economy sours, we blame the newcomers.”

I liked the last fight from the Matrix that I showed, but now this, this I don’t like. I don’t think technology has arrived to the point where people fighting each other can be done convincingly. This movie is one of the biggest examples of that. The parts that are obviously CGI can be compared to something that can be made in a video game. Okay, that’s a lie, video games are not that advanced yet, but we are getting there. You get the point right. Some non-human CG fights can be done right, like Transformers for instance. Sure, not the greatest movie in the world, but those robots were amazing. I expect to see more of them in the sequel.
I also think the choreography looks bad. It looks like a staged fight or something, unlike the last fight. I would have wanted it more raw, if that makes any sense. Anyway, the video is below. This one is more affected by the low quality that is inherent in Youtube’s nature. Sorry.
Racial Profiling November 22, 2008

Ah, yes, social profiling at it’s best. All undocumented immigrants are brown, therefore they all should pay the price of being brown.
There’s a lot not to like about the new administrative rule, which was quietly adopted over the summer by the Public Safety Commission after lawmakers refused for years to pass it. It could lead to more unlicensed, uninsured drivers and could feed the black market demand for fraudulent documents.
But the one thing the rule wasn’t supposed to do is snag citizens. The rule specifically states, “If U.S. citizen, no documentation needed.” That’s a bit of a Catch-22 since, in some cases, the state can’t tell if you’re a citizen without seeing documentation.
Villarreal said he showed the DPS employee a mini-birth certificate he carries in his wallet. (Being from South Texas, his parents told him always to carry documentation.) But the DPS employee wouldn’t accept it because the seal on the card, issued by Jim Wells County in 1987, had grown too faded to photocopy.
Eventually, Villarreal went to a nearby office and paid $30 to obtain a copy of his birth certificate. When he returned, he said the woman behind the counter gave him a cold stare.
“I’m sorry. It’s not you,” Villarreal said he told her. “But it shouldn’t have to be this way.”
“We get this all day long,” he recalls her saying.
Villarreal said the experience left him wondering if he’d been profiled because of his Spanish surname. And, he says, he couldn’t help noticing that the two Anglos originally in front of him in line breezed through the process, while a Hispanic and a South Asian were sent back for further documentation.
So, if you’re Latino, no matter if you’ve been here for generations and all, you still have to prove you’re American.
Sure, a lot of the people in the comment section of the article in question say they would be happy to show their birth certificates and such, but let’s not kid ourselves, most of those people will never be asked to do that. Only Latinos and anyone else who is not representative of America will be asked. Latinos, Muslims, and more, why? Because this is the way racial profiling works. Sure, the people comment that they wouldn’t mind but they’ve never been on my side. They’ve never been insulted as I have. Never been looked at differently. Sure, I’m undocumented, but what if I wasn’t? One thing I’m sure of, they will never have to through it.
The article asks the following the questions.
What does an American citizen look like, anyway? Dark-skinned or light? Tall or short? What questions reveal true citizenship? Which answers?
Sure, it may be smooth sailing for the white guy, in Wranglers, with a Houston twang, who, upon questioning, says he attended Bellaire High. Even Villarreal, bespectacled, often donning a suit and tie, may be deemed respectable-looking enough to escape trouble.
But what if his South Texas accent were thicker? What if he showed up in laborer’s clothes? Had an Arabic name? What if his wife wore a hijab?

The Darkness November 21, 2008

I grabbed the following passages from a book, they were at the beginning of each chapter. I won’t put the entire passage, just the beginning for today. If you can guess where the passage comes from, congratulations, you watched and read more about the series more than I have.
The dark is generous.
The first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret, but in bidding from us the truths of others.
The dark protects from what we dare not know.
Its second gift is comforting illusion: the case of gentle dreams in night’s embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in the day’s harsh light. But the greatest of its comforting is the illusion of the dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day. Because it is the day that is temporary.
Day is the illusion.
Its third gift is the light itself: as the day are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces that light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self.
With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins.
The dark is generous, and it is patient.
It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt.
The dark can be patient, because the slightest drop of rain will cause those seeds to sprout.
The rain will come, and the seeds will sprout, for the dark is the soil in which they grow, and it is the clouds above them, and it waits behind the star that gives them light.
The dark’s patience is infinite.
Eventually, even stars burn out.
The dark is generous, and it is the patient, and it always wins.
It always wins because it is everywhere.
It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday run and the dark is with you to the soles of your feet.
The brightest light casts the darkest shadows.
Undocumented Stories November 21, 2008

Another story about undocumented immigrants. I’m just going to quote the entire thing below, and I find that more and more of us share our stories. It is amazing.
A man living in the U.S. since he was 10 worked under the impression he was a U.S. citizen. He was arrested and found out he was actually living in this country illegally. He was deported.
Four other undocumented families could also be deported, even though their children are U.S. citizens. These parents are pleading to federal officials to let them remain in this country.
Unfortunately for Brian Cadena, there is no hope. Even though he was only 10 years old when he illegally crossed the border with his mom, there is no law that protects him from deportation. And the mothers of U.S. Citizen children are faced with the tough decision to move their very ill children back to their country where they may not survive.
Cadena says he was full of mixed emotions the day he found out he wasn’t a citizen of the United States. He never had problems with the law until he got arrested for the first time. He was put behind bars for domestic violence. But his charges were dismissed for insufficient evidence. But, instead of being freed, he was then detained by federal officials because of his immigration status.
“The judge told me I could go home, but then I came to find out ice was holding me so.”
He never questioned his legal status in the country. He lived in the U.S. for 10 years, not once doubting he was a citizen.
“I worked my daily basis, doing roofing and construction.”
That’s just one of many cases here in the Valley and the rest of the U.S. Immigration Attorney, Jodi Goodwin, has been working with undocumented immigrants for 14 years.
“There are so many children and young adults in the U.S. that have been here for so long, before to have a memory.”
Since the beginning of her career, she has been an advocate of protecting these children. She says the parents made the decision to live here illegally for a reason. the reason? A better future for the kids. For them, there is no law allowing them to legalize their residence status.
The Dream Act would provide undocumented high school students the opportunity to obtain permanent residency. Goodwin is hopeful the Dream Act will eventually pass so people like Cadena can return to the place they called home for many years. 20-year-old Cadena who was deported last week, tells us he is planning to cross the border illegally, all because of the family he left behind, a wife and 2-month old child who, unlike Cadena, are U.S. citizens.
These mothers are frustrated with the U.S. government. They feel powerless at this point. Tonight was the first time all four met each other. They’re all similar.
They are illegal immigrants who crossed to the U.S. hoping for a better future. Their children are U.S. citizens who require 24-hour assistance. The children have serious illnesses.
These ladies have put all faith on Goodwin. They want to remain in this country for their sick children. Both mothers want the opportunity to live in the U.S. for the sake of their kids’ well being. All four kids have a different illness.
12-year-old Amy Villalobos suffers from Spina Bifida, a birth defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord. She will remain in a wheelchair for the rest of her life and will need constant care.
Three and a half month old Raul Rojas suffers from heart conditions. He’s already had two heart surgeries. Marisol Andrade tells us her son will need medical care for the remainder of his life.
3-year-old Jessica Garza was born with several birth defects. She was born without knees and elbows. She’s already had four surgeries. She just started to take her first steps not too long ago but she’ll never be a normal child. She will require multiple surgeries as she grows older. Zulema Diaz says it was depressing to see her baby in those conditions. But what was more depressing for her was when Jessica attempted to walk and couldn’t.
And baby girl Daniela Mendez. She was born premature. She only weighed 1 lb at birth. She had her first surgery at only seven days old. This baby isn’t even two years old and has already had 23 surgeries. She has several chronic diseases. Daniela is legally blind. She will never be able to walk or talk.
Claudia Cepeda went through deep depression. She says her baby’s illness was tough to deal with. She compared it to a never-ending storm.
These ladies aren’t asking for anything special. They believe their children have the rights like any other U.S. citizen to be treated in their country. All these women want is for the federal government to allow them to remain with their children in the United States as they grow older with these difficult challenges.
People are only a few of the many others who are faced with the same difficult situations…
The following link will lead you to the original story and it has a video that I can’t post here.

The following video is supposed to be funny.
It is a political ad for the president of the video game called Command and Conquer Red Alert 3. But you know the funniest and the most terrifying thing about this, is that some people in real life, would want this. Some politicians, like Tom Tancredo for instance. It’s quite sad really.
Here is Ackerman’s stand on healthcare.
