Why is it that we continue our education? By we I mean us, the undocumented. Against all odds, many of us try our best to continue in a system that the majority of the time shun us.

Why is it that we continue our education? In the face of all the racist comments that try to degrade us, a lot of times succeeding in making us a bit depressed. In the face of a very strong opposition that is in talk radio and television, with the likes of Lou Dobbs who has the delusions that there will be a North American Union.

Why is is that we continue our education? Against out of state charges from states where most of the time we have lived. Where our parents paid taxes. Where we grew up.

Why? What drives us? I don’t know. I truly don’t know. Why am I here? Sometimes the opposition tells us that we are not wanted but I see startling examples of them being wrong.

The following site details more of us as they continue their fight in Arizona. Why though?

It is because of what the alternative. The TV and talk radio folks to whom you refer are ignorant and uneducated. There is a cure for that.

Keep working hard at your education. Regardless of the success or failure of the United States legislature, your education, to some extent, is in your control. Do what you can to improve yourself. Be better because you can.

Peace friend.

The U.S. would be in a very bad postion in the world if young immigrants (documented or undocumented) are uneducated. You are the future of our country. We need you – your talents, your skills, your passion. So please continue your education. You have something to contribute. You can make a difference, so please continue your education.

My mother sent me this inspiring article about an undocumented worker who became a neurosurgeon: Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa. At the age of 19, he hopped a border fence from Mexico into the United States. He started out as a migrant farmworker and a painter. But he worked hard, taking night courses and studying English in his spare time. He eventually got a scholarship to attend U.C. Berkeley. After CAL (my alma mater), he went on to John Hopkins University where he studied medicine. Now, he is a celebrated neurosurgeon and researcher who has won numerous awards.

So please, if at all possible, ignore the haters…they are a dying breed. Please continue to believe in yourself. You have something important to offer this country. We need you, and I am glad you are part of this country. As Barack Obama said, “Todos somos Americanos.”
