I have yet to sleep in the last 24 hours. And I still have to be up for more. I will either fall asleep on my way to class, trip and break my face, or I will fall asleep in class. Wow, both choices suck. And this is why I don’t update the blog, or do anything else. I hate this time of the year…

Kudos to Matias for exposing himself like that. He is far braver than most people I know or will ever know. Now, the Dream Act is on CNN.

Wow, I haven’t posted in a while. It is good to know that the blog continues to get lots of hits despite my inactivity. I will be more active during the summer but for now, school has taken over for the most part. Lots of papers and finals will soon be here.

But anyway, this has been mentioned in other sites and now here is my take on it. First though, the videos.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Well, if Tancredo were to come to my school, I would be pissed. Would I protest? I don’t think so actually. I would love to do nothing more than to throw a shoe at him Bush style but it would be counter productive for me to do anything that might threaten the man. I mean, I don’t think I would want to mess with the campus police people in my campus. I’m undocumented after all. I don’t think undocumented people were involved.

I don’t think this went well, specially with the breaking of the window. But what can one do? I think that I would allow him to speak and probably come back with some info of my own. Not in trying to convince Tancredo, that is not happening, but for the people in the audience, I’m sure that there are people in the audience who didn’t know anything about immigration.

This is a democracy, every asshole can get their day in the sun, even assholes like Tancredo.

Yes, I am a writer. This has been a long time coming but it is necessary. No more excuses, no more laziness. It is time. I’m a writer.

Back when I was in high school, as a sophomore, I decided that I was going to write a novel. A fantasy novel to be exact. And years later, in my last semester of high school, I actually completed my goal. I had a finished novel. Sure, it sucked. Sucked badly. But it was done. It was 234 pages long, single-spaced. Afterwards, I was accepted at my university and off I went to the new world that was college. My writing basically went out the window.

I have written some while in college, mainly for my two writing classes I had and during my summer after freshman year. I wrote short stories, never wanting to commit myself again to another project as big as a novel because I thought that it was going to be too hard and time consuming. I told myself that now I had a social life with good friends. But I’ve always looked back on my original novel, reading it from time to time, cringing my teeth at the many, many mistakes that it has.

I believe that I do want to write more. I do want to take on another project. I want to write more short stories. No more excuses. No more saying that I’m too depressed to work on writing. That I have too much fun with friends to write. No more I have too much work from school. No more saying that because I’m undocumented and that my life partially sucks, I won’t write. And finally, I will no longer excuse my inactivity because I write this blog. Blogging is far different from actual writing, in fact, blogging is something that I do avoid actual writing. No more!

I, here in my space, promise myself that I will write the minimum of one page a day, every day from now on, to either a book project or a short story. I commit myself. Today. And since a writer just doesn’t live by writing, I also commit to reading at least 20 pages of a novel of my choosing that is not related to school work. I do this now because I’ve missed writing far too much for me to stop now, not after one novel and 30 short stories. I believe I have much more to say and I will say it, as sucky as it is.

Here is a quote.

“Aspiring my ass. You write or you don’t. The curse of this profession is that it’s so much more fun being a writer than it is writing.” (Gary Brandner, Billy Lives!)

I won’t write because I want to, I will because I have to. I’ve committed myself publicly, and we’ll see how it goes.

It’s an impossible position we’ve been put in where we have to choose sending unauthorized migrant youth to die in a war across the sea or in a war in the U.S.A. There’s one thing I know though. It’s that I haven’t met a single unauthorized migrant youth that opposes the DREAM Act. It’s only people that have the privilege of legal status that pretend to know what it’s best for unauthorized migrant youth that oppose the DREAM Act. Kyle at his blog, Citizen Orange.

In the war of immigration, the Dream Act to be exact, people like myself not only have to fight against the nativist who hate us, but also against people who you would expect be on our side. But no, they aren’t. Why? Because of the fact the Dream Act also makes people like myself elegible to join the army. America is embroiled in two unpopular fronts on regards to war, Iraq and Afganistan, and I can understand why you can say that the Dream Act is wrong in the regards to the military. My answer for that will be what Prerna answered back to a particular person who commented.

For Erendira Guerra and the likes:

I am literally tired of people who claim to be ‘immigrant rights advocates’ but dare to take the bully pulpit from their positions of power and privilege.

How f***ing dare you tell immigrant youth that they should not advocate for their own rights?

Opposing an educational opportunity such as the DREAM Act is precisely what creates conditions for military recruitment. Undocumented students are joining the military right now, putting themselves at risk of death and deportation, just to get legalized since going to college does not give them that option. A backdoor draft for undocumented immigrant youth already exists because there aren’t enough opportunities for legalization such as H-I-G-H-E-R E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N. In effect, opposing the DREAM Act means putting the lives of countless students at risk.

That’s really progressive. Bravo.

Right now, the death and deportation of thousands of undocumented youth fall directly on the heads of those that oppose the DREAM Act. How do you sleep at night?

My family, my friggin family of legal residents and citizens are fighting mortgage companies right now to prevent a foreclosure and I–with my Graduate degree and a gazillion skills–cannot do anything because I can’t get jobs that I am overqualified for. How DARE you good-for-nothing people try to disempower immigrant youth due to your own manifestation of ‘white men’s burden?’ Get a life and start doing some real advocacy for migrant rights.

You can read more here, at Citizen Orange.

It seems that common sense has prevailed in Maryland.

The Maryland State Board of Education has blocked an effort to make Frederick County public school administrators count the number of illegal immigrant students.

Why is this good? Because it won’t scare kids and parents shitless. And that’s good. With all the negativity in the media about undocumented immigrants, the last thing a kids needs is to think that school knows what he is and will bring ICE in to deport them. There are some things that are just wrong, and scaring children is one of them. I for one applaud the Maryland State Board of Education. Read more about it here.
