You know what I find very bothering a lot of the times. It is this idea of the perceived threat that people like myself represent. As if I was stealing someone’s seat at this university. Or that there are too many of us who are displacing citizens. First of all, if we get in, it is because we are smart enough to get in, okay, if a citizen or legal resident wasn’t able to, don’t blame US for your failures. We made it, despite being undocumented and the many problems that we bring, if you didn’t, its your own damn fault.
But yes, it bothers me because of the fact that actually, we are not that many. According to the following article, in Texas, undocumented students account to 0.7% of the 1.14 million of people in the college system. We are less than one percent. And yet people are always trying to not allow us to go to school, like the state of South Caroline that has banned people like me.
Here is a quote from the article,
There’s no question that the U.S. should enforce its laws to deter illegal immigration. But the vast majority of those who come into the country illegally do so for jobs, not for a break on the cost of college tuition. Making it harder for students who’ve been here for years to further their education might look tough, but it will defer good kids’ dreams more than it will deter illegal immigration.
There is a lot of truth to those words. Laws like the ones in South Carolina are doing nothing to deter undocumented immigration, but it is certainly deterring the path of students who didn’t decide to come here in the first place, they just are here.

Well, this is an example of what happens when you disobey the simplest of laws. From an article I found online.
I found out a little more about why Gutierrez was originally stopped by Phoenix PD on August 11. Her friends had told me it was due to a busted tail light, but police spokeswoman Stacie Derge finally was able to determine that an Officer Barilla stopped Gutierrez that Saturday night because she was driving without her headlights on, a common enough traffic violation. Derge says a citation was issued for the headlights thing and for driving with no license. That’s when Gutierrez’s car was impounded. When Gutierrez tried to get the car out of impound from PHX PD on 8/14, she was arrested for (allegedly) using a fake Mexican i.d. and booked. Later she was reported to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and they convinced her to sign a voluntary deportation order, earning herself a one-way ticket to Nogales.
It seems interesting that she was “convinced” to fill out a voluntary deportation order. Everyone of us knows that once you do that, it is game over. That’s it. So I highly doubt she would have done with incentive, or being forced. ICE can be intimidating. So, yeah, she was on her college. This is to everyone who believes that just because some of us go to college, we are no different from anyone. We can and are deported a lot of the times.

Yeah, I’m going to see it today, with a lot of my friends because I’ve been hyping it a lot so I said to myself, why not post even more things about it. I love the film. I think this will be the 4th or 5th time I see it on a theater, and that’s not counting the times I’ve seen it online. No, I didn’t download it illegaly. I highly recommend it and I will be writing a review soonish. But go see it! This all comes from the District 9 Rottentomatoes page. Will I post more of these types of quotes? Probably. As I will point out in my review, District 9 is one of the best sci-fi films I’ve seen in years but one of my personal favorite films overall.
“This low-budget film with its unknown cast is recommended because it ultimately is thought-provoking and smart. This isn’t a sci-fi thriller so much as it is a sci-fi drama. It poses several serious questions about the state of humanity.” Christopher Smith. Bangor Daily News.
“District 9 delivers on all fronts it’s an imaginative sci-fi tale, a gritty actioner, a dazzling effects film, a compelling dramatic story, a biting satire, and a flat out exciting piece of pop entertainment.” Beth Accomando. KPBS.org
Believe the hype. As a sci-fi thrill ride, and a provocative commentary on xenophobia, District 9 is definitely all that it’s cracked up to be. Kit Bowen. The Movie Kit
This might go down as the year that science-fiction cinema, despite the deafening crash and clangor of sparring robots, began to rediscover its brains, heart and soul. Cary Darling. Dallas Morning News
You’ve seen alien invasion flicks before, and you’ve seen more than your share of summer blockbusters. But you’ve never seen anything quite like District 9. Adam Graham. Detroit News
I know this word gets thrown around a lot and it should be used sparingly, but this film is very close to being a masterpiece in science fiction cinema. Kevin McCarthy. BDK Reviews
An engaging sci-fi parable rooted in both universal themes and a specific setting that often takes you by surprise with both its smarts and intensity. Gary Franklins. Dark Horizons
On Life’s Irony… August 30, 2009

This came to me as ironic. I had a really good friend with whom I can no longer speak to. And it is ironic that friendship expanded all the time when I was basically in a dark place in my life with dealing with my depression, among other things, and now that I’m much more better, my friend isn’t around to see it. Irony. And I feel safe writing this now, because well, I don’t think that this particular friend is reading this blog anymore.
I stopped thinking of life in terms of it hating me or loving me. There is no life out there decides anything. Stuff just happens. And I find it surprising that I have changed so much these days. The big event was of course, going one-on-one against a family member, my dad strangely enough, and not my mom. But that was just, an amazing day, for doing what was necessary, as scary as it was, it was a huge step for me.
One of my favorite activities while on my college campus is taking a stroll in the middle of the night. And tonight, I passed by the place where a friend a found me, near a soccer field, in one of the darkest moment’s of my life back last late April. And today, I sat there, not believing that I once felt like that. Today, I feel different. I don’t see life in the same morbid terms as before. I’m not saying I’m not depressed or that I’m happy, I just don’t feel that bad. And it has nothing to do with being back in school, after all, the epic fight against my dad happened way before school started. But I don’t even want to say that I don’t feel as bad, that’s the thing, I don’t feel bad at all. And that my friends, is very strange indeed.
So, who am I now? I don’t really know. I’m doing things I never expected to do. I have feelings that aren’t the usual morbidness. It is a scary thing, to change on the inside. You don’t know what will come out.
One thing is for sure, I wish my friend was around to see it. I’m sure it would be enjoyable to see. Others have seen it and caught it on video too actually. And they are under the threat of death of never, ever, releasing said video on Youtube or Facebook. But I also believe that my friend wouldn’t believe a word I’m saying, and that’s okay, I can barely believe it myself. As another friend told me, C’est la vie. I will continue to write on 2 other things that have changed about me as well, interesting things, at least to me.
MG.
PS. To clarify, the video of me is NOT me being a drunken fool. It is me being…a ‘happy’ fool.

I used to fear being deported. I used to fear going back. I no longer fear such things. No, it doesn’t mean that I will be happy if that were to happen, but I will accept it and move on. It doesn’t mean that I won’t fight it with everything I have, but it doesn’t mean the end of the world.
Through out the last couple of weeks, I had a lot of time to think about this matter, of being deported. And frankly, well, I now look at it as this way. I lead a challenging life, deportation and more, well, it will just be another challenge.
A challenge I no longer fear.

Undocumented Students Banned August 29, 2009

Well, well, this is the worst example of what a state can do. The banning of undocumented students as they want to try to go to school higher than high school. Now, according to law, the school has to report any incoming applicant to immigration authorities. Now my friends that is fucked up. Thankfully, I don’t live in that state and I can actually go to school, even a state school.
This is one of the quotes from the school system, Clemson University.
David Grigsby, vice provost for international affairs for Clemson University, said he did not think his university had any illegal immigrants enrolled before the ban was passed. He said most students file for financial aid and verify their status.
Grigsby said the new law is making the university check for more evidence of the legal status of students when they enroll.
“The impact on Clemson is we will be having to work extra hours to make sure we comply,” Grigsby said. “It is quite a bit of paperwork. We don’t think we will have a problem.”
He said students can demonstrate their status in many ways, including the presentation of a driver’s license, a passport or a birth certificate. The registrar’s office will verify status and, if an illegal immigrant is enrolled, the student will be reported to immigration authorities, Grigsby said.
That is scary my friends. I guess my best advice for people in South Carolina who want to continue after high school is to try to go to private schools if they can. Hell, aim higher than that and go to Ivy League schools if you can. They have a record of helping students like myself.
But as to what is happening in South Carolina, for shame. Read more here.

Advice for teachers. This comes from the following article.
- Greet all your students at the door with the broadest of smiles and a handshake. Do it every day, because you never know when one of your kids will be picked up and deported.
- If you know a high school senior who lacks documentation, provide him or her with a list of private scholarships. Undocumented kids in Phoenix, because of 300 are required to pay the prohibitive cost of out-of-state tuition and are ineligible for any state assistance.
- Tell them they need to follow all the laws. If they are driving without a license or using a fake ID, they are treading dangerous waters and setting themselves up for deportation. Share with them the story of Virginia Gutierrez who was pulled over because her headlights weren’t on. A bright girl with a scholarship to ASU, Virginia, the daughter of undocumented parents, had been in America since she was three years old. I can find neither rhyme nor reason in deporting a student of Virginia’s calibre, but it happened, and until the DREAM Act passes as part of major immigration reform, it will happen over and over again.
- Reiterate that they must obey all laws. Undocumented kids need to know that jaywalking, loitering, riding a bike against traffic, can get them deported. They are being watched, and they must behave accordingly. Direct them to Dream Act AZ where they can download a Know Your Rights card to carry with them at all times.
I feel kind of sad that the advice they have to give us is live in fear of ICE, try your best not to be deported. No one should have to live like that. The rest of the article is pretty good, talking about students who are waiting for the Dream Act.

So, something that has been bothering since E3 is this: delays. What is up with them? I’ve seen way too many games delayed until next year for whatever reasons. Are they all so afraid of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 or something. Granted, that game will kick ass this coming November but still. As of now, these are the games I am looking forward to. Games in Bold are games that I would really enjoy to play, while those not in bold, are games that I would probably get, eventually.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, for sure buying no matter, what unless the planet is destroyed.
Assassin’s Creed 2, probably for sure buying.
Alpha Protocol, depending on reviews.
Halo: ODST, well, it is Halo, but then again, I never really cared for the franchise.
Uncharted 2, I enjoyed the first one but it is not a franchise that I am dying for, maybe buying.
Dragon Age Origin. It is a BioWare title, so it HAS to be good, I hope.
Borderlands, which might be interesting.
Brutal Legend, which I really hope is good.
But what the hell? These are the games that I am now waiting for either delays or because they are being released next year.
God of War 3, since E3, this one has been a 2010 title.
Dark Void, delayed.
Bayonneta, delayed.
Bioshock 2, delayed, this delay was really painful.
Heavy Rain, delayed.
Splinter Cell: Conviction, delayed.
Singularity, delayed.
Mass Effect 2, natural 2010 title.
MAG, delayed.
Alan Wake, natural 2010 title.
Mafia 2, delayed.
And for now, I feel the pain of not having a Wii, since Little King’s Story has just been released. Alas. So, what is up with the delays? Sigh.

Well, it seems that some people have some sense, and empathy. People from the Board of Community Colleges in North Carolina want to repel the ban that prohibits undocumented students from going to community colleges. Of course, such a law doesn’t make any sense. Here is a quote.
Board member Stuart Fountain said Thursday at the board’s policy committee meeting that the colleges shouldn’t stand in the way of anyone who wants to attend.
“Without this option, we are creating a second-class citizenry, a group of people who have no option but to go ahead and join a gang,” Fountain said.
They would rather see the students pay out of state tuition than not being able to go at all. That is better than nothing.

Wow, and I thought we had it bad. According to the following article, Italy has really turned against their undocumented immigrant population.
Four policemen enter the cafe and single out those of African descent, asking to check their official documents.
“They’re in here three or four times a week looking for people without papers,” Michael says.
And not only that, but this too.
Under the legislation, illegal immigrants are liable to pay a fine of 10,000 euros (£8,700; $14,200) and can now be detained by the authorities for up to six months.
In addition, people who knowingly house undocumented migrants can now face up to three years in prison.
Now my friends, that is truly terrible. Such a proposal has already been considered here in the US, which lead to the huge marches a few years ago. Nothing came of it, thankfully, but I have to wonder, how could one ever hope to live like that. Not being able to ask your friends for shelter for fear of them being thrown into jail because of you.
It seems that being undocumented anywhere is bad.

Another dreamer who can’t go anywhere, sigh. Now, I can’t believe this is happening, because this is wrong.
She didn’t enroll in a community college. She can’t enroll in a university because she didn’t take the SAT.
It’s not for lack of trying; current state laws prohibit her from attending a two-year institution and the SAT requires participants to have a valid North Carolina identification card.
Really? What the hell? Can’t even take the damn SAT now? That is fucked up. Sigh. But yes, the person in question cannot go to community college because of the fact that we aren’t allowed in the state of North Carolina.
Karen’s frustration grows when she sees teenagers with documentation drop out of high school, work at a dead-end job or get pregnant at a young age.
“It’s wasted papers because they don’t want to go forward, but they always blame us for the economy being bad and never think about the kids who want to go to school.”
Now, as an undocumented student, you can’t imagine how much anger I can have when I see legal residents squandering their opportunities. More than once I have confronted people like that, and it hasn’t been pretty. I can be extremely mean and terrifying if I have to be and god knows I have been with the people I dislike.
And this is one low blow, because it is ridicoulous. Sigh.
One good thing came from her senior year: Sabdy found her calling after becoming qualified to be a certified nursing assistant through her high school and classes offered at Davidson County Community College. She was one of 11 chosen at her school to take the classes. But when it came time to get licensed, she had to drop out, as she was required to have an identification card.
I think we can all agree in that the system is broken and stuff like the stuff this girl is going through should not happen, not in this country.
And this is heartbreaking.
Sabdy’s guidance counselors were no help. They didn’t consider her a high priority since she was undocumented. They kept telling her to come back next week. She’s not sure if it was strictly apathy or that they didn’t know how to specifically help her.
“They’d say, ‘We’ll deal with you later because we’re worried about the people who can actually get into college,’” she said.
“They helped my neighbor get $45,000 in scholarships, almost a full ride into a school,” she said. “That’s what was top priority for them, the people who could get in. I was mad.”
Sabdy told herself it was fine if they didn’t want to help her. She’d tried to figure it out on her own. One of the few friends who knew she was undocumented gave her a list of scholarships that Sabdy could qualify for, but the scholarships expired that very same day.
At times, she said, it felt as though she wasted her time clocking in community service hours and getting on the honor roll.
In the basement stands a shrine full of trophies and honor roll certificates earned by Sabdy and her siblings, as well as her graduation photo, along with her balloons and banner. She hopes her accomplishments will one day reach the light and not have to stay in the shadows.
It got increasingly difficult as she watched her neighbor place a college bumper sticker on his car and her friends talked about their collegiate futures. When asked about her plans she’d lie, sometimes running home in tears.
“I’d tell them that I was going to community college just so they wouldn’t say anything,” Sabdy said.
You know what I say to those guidance councilors. FUCK YOU.
